Book Selection/Deselection Policy

A. Objectives
Basic to the Lake County Public Library’s Book Selection Policy is the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read Statement of the American Library Association. Emphasis in the selection of library materials will be placed on educational, informational and recreational needs as identified by the
Director or her/his representative.

The Library will attempt to provide opposing views on controversial topics and should represent the best possible balance between honest presentation of both side of sensitive issues.

B. Responsibility
Responsibility for materials selection policies lies with the Board of Trustees.  The Board delegates to the Director and her/his staff the selection of library materials and development of the collection.

C. Criteria
Whenever possible, the judgments of qualified book reviewers in library selection guides, objective media sources and individuals with specific areas of expertise are used as aide to selection.

Materials are considered on the basis of:

1. overall purpose
2.  need
3. authority and competence in presentation
4. availability from other sources
5. popular demand
6. relation to the existing collection
7. cost relative to budgetary limitations

The Library will acquire, as far as is practical, all materials contributing to a knowledge of local history.

The Library will complement local school libraries but will not assume responsibilities that belong to the schools such as providing textbooks or extensive materials that are needed by students for school assignments.

Deselection of materials:  In order to maintain the library collection in its most attractive and useful condition, materials which are no longer useful or not in a condition suitable for circulation will be removed. Weeded materials may be donated to another institution, sold for the benefit of the Library, or discarded.
